Sometimes, we all need a little bit of YA fantasy to help us escape the day-to-day。 When I picked up "House of Ash and Shadow," I was hopeful that this would be a classic dive into all my favorite tropes。 Unfortunately, while Stone delivers on the tropes, this book lacks the depth to make it an enjoyable read or a series worth continuing。The main character, Fallon, embodies all the stereotypical traits a YA heroine must have。 She is oh so skinny and small, poor, and helps support her single fath Sometimes, we all need a little bit of YA fantasy to help us escape the day-to-day。 When I picked up "House of Ash and Shadow," I was hopeful that this would be a classic dive into all my favorite tropes。 Unfortunately, while Stone delivers on the tropes, this book lacks the depth to make it an enjoyable read or a series worth continuing。The main character, Fallon, embodies all the stereotypical traits a YA heroine must have。 She is oh so skinny and small, poor, and helps support her single father with her one friend while living in her "hut。" However, just as her characterization is unoriginal, her story arc throughout the book is equally uninspired and problematic for my tastes。 Fallon can't touch anyone because of a curse, except for the hottie prince, for no apparent reason, who she just can't hate, no matter how much he mistreats her。 She is entirely focused on her romantic interests, her desire to have children, and her fixation on being kissed。 The character is not only a blatant stereotype but also lacks the depth of character to motivate any of her heroic actions。 Plot points in this book fall down from on high, laid out with very little explanation。 In addition to the poor characterization and weak female lead, the novel is riddled with modern slang that makes it read like fanfiction you might find on AO3。 I'll note that I am not this author's target demographic, and her young readers, I'm sure, will enjoy the romantic and dramatic love triangle。 However, there are plenty of other YA novels in this genre that I believe would better suit any reader。 。。。more

This would be the book to read if I was a teenager。 Overall just was meh for me。

Fae AnnieDNF @61%, too young YA for me。 I like a bit more darkness and nuance in my MCs, these were too childish and lacking in brains。 It read more like HS than College。 I did like that the FMC had a moral compass, but it needed more tension or something。 The evil was a bit lame。

DNF 41%Just couldn’t get past the inner monologue of the character。 A little bit too middle school for me, but if that’s where your reading level is at, this is a pretty good book~

Great Story I couldn’t put this book down。 It had me held with the fast paced action and twists。 Thoroughly recommend this series。 Would make a really great movie or series。

Amazing reading!! After few shitty books this was like a gulp of fresh air😊 one day and i was done, it was a pity- such tiny book。 the plot was a bit similar to harry potter- girl that suddenly discovers her magic and enrols into magic school, saving the world stuff and so on。 Loved it。 😍The love affair was obvious from the begining but somehow was not very into your face lame teenage romance。 Veeery rare to find that。So all in all- the only upside is that the next book is still not published。 O Amazing reading!! I really wanted to love this The synopsis sounded amazing。 And I really thought I was in for a steamy, dark romance。 Especially since the MC is nearly 18 at the start of the book and the way she lives and works, I assumed her to be an adult。 But this turned out to be VERY, VERY YA (which I usually love) and also another ACADEMY book。 Which is not what I was after。Had book 2 already been out, I would have read it since we are left with a cliffhanger and a weird twist。 But with it being a few mont I really wanted to love this The synopsis sounded amazing。 And I really thought I was in for a steamy, dark romance。 Especially since the MC is nearly 18 at the start of the book and the way she lives and works, I assumed her to be an adult。 But this turned out to be VERY, VERY YA (which I usually love) and also another ACADEMY book。 Which is not what I was after。Had book 2 already been out, I would have read it since we are left with a cliffhanger and a weird twist。 But with it being a few months until its release, I can tell you I will forget this book and not move on。 That said, the MC is VERY likable。 Truly。 I didn’t hate her or have any kind of issues with her。 No eye rolling or frustration or even feelings of annoyance。 She’s truly good and a great character。 The love interest? Meh。 But maybe book 2 would change that。 Who knows? But if you like younger YA and academy romances, go for it。 You may enjoy it。 。。。more
